Six New Arrivals
Our girls have arrived. At the moment they are recovering from their journey in the dark and quiet of their new home. We can’t wait for them to start wandering about.
Yesterday my son and I went to Mini Meadows Farm in Northamptonshire. They do courses as an introduction to chicken keeping. It was so enjoyable we wanted to get our chickens there and then, but thought we’d set their home up first then return the next day.
Which we did. We now have six hybrid chickens. Hybrid chickens are those which have been bred specifically to get as many eggs as possible. The pure breeds may only lay for half the year whereas a hybrid will pretty much lay all year round. Between 250 and 330 eggs per year. I always thought the hybrids were the standard brown ones, called a Ranger, but no there are some stunning hybrids laying white, brown and pale blue eggs.
As well as a Ranger we’ve adopted a Sussex Star, Speckledy, Coral, Black Star and a Columbine.
I cannot recommend Mini Meadows Farm highly enough. If you are thinking of getting chickens (go on!) then it is well worth a visit. They will answer all your questions, they won’t laugh at you, all their chickens undergo a full vaccination programme and they even deliver to quite a large radius.
